This is a really different game to what we were seeing 48 hours ago.

This is a really defensive field, the ball isn't doing much and South Africa are only really able to get singles at the moment. Let's see how long Australia can keep this up for.

At what point do South Africa become favourites? There always comes a point in a successful chase where the pressure switches from the batting team to the fielding team. Not sure we're quite there yet.

Australia know that Temba Bavuma is struggling. They are really making him run quickly.

Bowler Josh Hazlewood has his hands on his knees. Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon's hands are on their heads. Alex Carey and lone slip Beau Webster throw their arms up in disbelief.

Aiden Markram narrowly avoids chopping onto his stumps and sneaks two. He also pushes Temba Bavuma to hobble three singles. Another five ticked off South Africa's chase.

A bit of news. The injury Steve Smith sustained to the little finger of his right hand, after dropping Temba Bavuma, is currently being assessed and he is set to go to hospital.

The timing of this shot by Temba Bevuma, he's just used the pace and guided it away. You can see him hobbling a bit now.

Boundary for Temba Bavuma as he clips Josh Hazlewood off his legs!

He hobbles the first run but the ball reaches the rope to remove the necessity for further exertion.

Two balls later, he darts for a single. It's a painful watch.

Temba Bevuma doesn't look fluent but he's getting end to end.

    Need 187 runs

Aiden Markram's single is the only run off the 25th over.

We've had confirmation that Temba Bavuma is struggling with a hamstring issue. But he's going to keep going.

    The players are back out.

Aiden Markram has 49 (66), Temba Bavuma has 11 (20) and South Africa (94-2) need 188 more runs to win.

Australia captain Pat Cummins will bowl the first over after tea.

Momentum is with South Africa at the moment but there is something which might reassure Australia fans... by my calculations, 15 wickets have fallen in the evening sessions so far.

Could we be in for more bowling chaos?

However, Aiden Markram could steal Starc's thunder.

The South Africa opener is 49 not out (66) and his side need 188 runs to be crowned World Test Championship with eight wickets (and more than two days) in hand.

    Thanks Mike.

Good luck on your hunt for sweets. I fear you might be disappointed. All I can see is a booklet of post-it notes.

A decent session for South Africa on balance, they require 188 runs for victory.

Time for the players to take some tea, time for me to see if the tennis team left any sweets hidden behind the back of their monitors.

I'll hand you over to Elizabeth Botcherby.

  • Tea - SA 94-2published at 24 overs

    Markram 49, Bavuma 11

Mitchell Starc to bowl the last over before tea.

Temba Bavuma opens the face and guides him for a single through backward point, hobbling to the non-striker's end.

I think it is a hamstring issue - imagine me running at Sharpham Estate parkrun on New Year's Day 2023 (sorry if you weren't there, alas you won't have another frame of reference).

Three more singles, the last of which takes Aiden Markram to 49 going into the interval.
